Multivitamin/mineral, antioxidants and EPA/DHA – 2packets/day w/ meals (See "Please Read First") Lactobillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis (7.5 million live organisms each) in a powdered form mixed with water twice per day. Allowing these probiotic organisms to be swished around the mouth helps to inoculate the mouth with healthy bacteria to inhibit growth of bad germs L-Glutamine (3,500 mg), Deglycyrrhized Licorice Root (500 mg) and Aloe Leaf extract (50 mg) – Two to three times per day. A powdered form of this can be mixed and taken together with the probiotics.

Causes of halitosis or bad breath commonly include an overgrowth of bacteria and/or yeast on the teeth, tongue, cheeks, tonsils or within the nose and sinuses. Tooth abscesses and gum disease can give off a very foul odor, especially when the gums are very red and inflamed. Halitosis can also occur due to the presence of poorly digested food in the stomach or small intestine. This can create an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine which can be diagnosed by a breath test known as “Bacterial Overgrowth of the Small Intestine” available to health practitioners through Genova Diagnostics (formerly known as Great Smokies Diagnostic Lab) www.gdx.net of Asheville, NC. Brushing the tongue is extremely important in controlling halitosis. An excess of refined carbohydrates will feed yeasts in the mouth and upper respiratory system, especially if the client has had antibiotics in recent years and never repopulated their system with probiotic bacteria. Tongue scrapers are also available at most drug stores.
Refined carbohydratess will feed any bad germs that are living in the multiple folds of the tonsils. Gargling with mouthwash or flushing the tonsils with an oral irrigation device can sometimes be helpful but extremely difficult to accomplish without getting water down your trachea.
Dryness of the mouth can make halitosis worse. Dryness is exacerbated by smoking, coffee, many medications, and mouth rinses with a high alcohol content. There are special mouth rinses for people with a dry mouth. Dryness can also result in a high rate of tooth decay, especially on exposed root surfaces. These susceptible roots can be protected by a fluoride gel applied before bedtime.
As with other conditions on this website, I advocate the use of rinsing the mouth with a combination of powdered probiotics and the amino acid L-Glutamine with herbs. These two substances promote healing and help establish a normal bacterial flora that discourages the growth of harmful germs.
