Anxiety and the fear of pain are the most common reasons that people put off going to the dentist. Unfortunately, avoidance tends to cause bigger dental problems that are often very costly and too painful to ignore. Regular dental checkups are your biggest insurance against dental misery and expensive procedures. We want to identify problems while they are small and easy to fix. For people who have dental anxiety from prior bad experiences, there are many options to choose from. Some dentists prescribe mood elevating drugs to be taken prior to an appointment. Nitrous oxide is a very safe form of conscious sedation that is popular with many people who want to take the edge off. Many general dentists also now offer unconscious sedation using various drugs. Dental hygiene appointments have options such as lidocaine anesthetic rinses that will tone down sensitivity of gum tissue throughout the mouth. For more extensive periodontal problems, dental hygienists in many states are trained and certified in delivering dental anesthetics to totally numb a quadrant or two of the mouth per appointment for a pain-free experience. If a client states that they experience anxiety or panic on a regular basis, there may be a biochemical imbalance that may be improved with nutritional intervention. The term “biochemical imbalance” refers to deficiencies or imbalance of our biochemical nutrients. Many drug companies have heavily advertised this term, which gives the public the erroneous belief that the only remedy to such problems is a drug. Many people with anxiety have had mixed results with anti-anxiety medications because the drugs do not replace the deficient nutrients.
Often, nutrition combined with a clients’ drug therapy will be more successful than drug therapy alone. The natural remedies listed here may also help depression, which often coexists with anxiety. However, you should NEVER stop or decrease any medications without the guidance of your doctor. Nutritional remedies take time and are not intended to take the place of your medications. Some people, but not everyone can recover their normal brain function and with the help of their doctor, decrease or eliminate their medications. Do not ever attempt to make changes in medication on your own! By far, the most important natural remedy for anxiety is the amino acid, L-Glutamine. Over the past ten years the vast majority of my health coaching clients with anxiety have been helped by the recommendation of this simple nutrient, combined with the core nutrition already mentioned of a good multivitamin/mineral and EPA/DHA. L-Glutamine is used in great amounts by our skeletal muscles, intestines and brain. Some of the manifestations of L-Glutamine deficiency are an intolerance to exercise (sore muscles), irritable bowel syndrome and anxiety disorders. L-Glutamine is used to make GABA, a neurotransmitter that tones down the excitatory neurotransmitters that create anxiety. Homeopathic remedies for anxiety and nervous tension are often very good for giving very quick, effective relief. I have seen a child throwing a tantrum become calm in about ten minutes after taking a homeopathic remedy for nervous tension. These remedies are very safe for children as young as one year old and even for pregnant women. Vitamin and herbal remedies for anxiety include supplying vitamins and other factors that have been shown to improve brain function and memory. N-Acetylcysteine, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Ginkgo Leaf Extract and various B vitamins are very effective in this regard. I have also used these nutrients with great results in two clients who were suffering persistent memory loss from carbon monoxide poisoning. Dietary considerations for those suffering from anxiety would be to avoid all stimulants such as caffeine and stimulant drugs. Refined sugar, alcohol and white flour products (bread, crackers, cookies, pancakes, etc.) are notorious for causing deficiencies of nutrients, especially B vitamins, which are extremely important for proper brain function. Plus, simple sugars feed harmful germs in the GI tract, which would accelerate the depletion of nutrients for healing of the intestines, especially L-Glutamine.
Anxiety relief is also enhanced by avoiding all food chemicals and preservatives such as MSG, aspartame (NutraSweet), saccharine, BHA and BHT, sulfites and artificial colorings. These chemicals can adversely affect the brain in some people by increasing excitatory neurotransmitter activity.
